As Calgary’s only medical detox centre, the Renfrew Recovery Centre provides an invaluable breakthrough moment for up to 40 patients at any given time taking their first steps toward recovery from addiction. The Centre offers medically supported detoxification services to people while they withdraw from the effects of alcohol and other drugs, as well as gambling stabilization.
Growing up, Heather appeared to have an ordinary childhood; two parents, brothers and sisters, a dog, and a lovely house in Haysboro. However, when you pull back the curtain, hers was anything but. Heather’s parents suffered with addiction, and there was a family history of it on both sides. Heather’s resiliency has helped her break the cycle of addiction for her family.
Sara was working as an emergency dispatcher when she experienced trauma that she needed to get help for. Professional counselling and an extensive Traumatic Psychological Injury program were unsuccessful. Her doctor recommended a therapy she hadn’t heard about: Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS), a therapy used to treat extreme depression. Within a few sessions, Sara started to feel a real difference.
Mental health and addiction challenges may be largely invisible illnesses – but their impact on individuals, families, and the healthcare system are significant and critically need our support. With the help of donors, Calgary Health Foundation is supporting mental health care delivery for people in our hospitals and our community, working with partners to ensure patients don’t fall through the cracks.
