A&W’s community giving sparks city-wide campaign

“Everyone wants to change the world, but they all want someone else to do it for them. We all have to start somewhere.”

This was said by Balwant Singh, the owner of A&W Auburn Bay. Balwant joined the Fund Development Council for Calgary Health Foundation in the spring of 2021, after witnessing the crucial work being done by the foundation during the COVID-19 pandemic. Moved by these efforts, he decided to take action within his own community.

Balwant launched a special initiative at his restaurant: $1 from different meal items sold over several months was donated to Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) in Calgary through Calgary Health Foundation. He has been running this cause annually ever since.

“We decided to start with the earliest members of our community,” said Balwant. “Giving back to the NICU provides care to the tiniest patients.”

This was just one example of Balwant’s dedication to giving back. Since taking ownership of the A&W in Auburn Bay in 2016, he has organized over 200 fundraisers, supporting various causes, including charities, schools, and individuals in his community. For Balwant, Auburn Bay isn’t just a neighbourhood; it’s family.

“This community is more like a family to me. And being a family man who is part of this community, the least I can do is help during tough times. That’s where this all started,” Balwant said.

Balwant’s commitment hasn’t gone unnoticed by A&W. He’s even been invited to present to franchisee groups on how to host successful community fundraisers.

“The work Balwant has done in his community and the support he’s received from the entire Auburn Bay area has been fantastic,” said Josee Belzil, A&W Canada Business Manager. “It’s done with a lot of sincerity from Balwant and that’s always been what he’s asked others to do it with.”

Balwant’s philanthropic efforts have been so inspiring and impactful that they’ve caught the attention of A&W on a national level. Now, A&W is launching a city-wide campaign from August 26 – September 8, where $1 from every Kids Pack sold will be donated to Calgary Health Foundation in support of Calgary’s NICUs. All A&W restaurants in Calgary, Cochrane, Chestermere, and Okotoks are participating.

Josee mentioned that these types of initiatives are 100% driven by their restaurants and wanting to help out their own communities, and that’s why A&W loves these community fundraisers.

“It just goes to show that your business will do well and you’ll be able to provide for your staff and your community if you do it with genuine love in your heart and a real interest in those around you,” said Josee.

For business owners looking to give back and make a difference in their communities, Balwant has simple advice: nothing is too small, and you always have the community to back you up.

“We all have to start somewhere. And believe me, when you help someone, it’s the best thing you’ve ever felt.”

Don’t miss your chance to also make a difference! Visit any A&W restaurants in Calgary, Cochrane, Chestermere, or Okotoks between August 26 and September 8 to support this meaningful cause!
